How To Fix Misted Windows

When a double-glazed window mists up, it usually means the airtight seal surrounding the glass has failed. When the seal fails, moisture and outside air get trapped between the glass layers and you cannot wipe this away because it’s trapped inside. This “misting” between your window is what the industry calls a "blown" double-glazing unit. This is a common problem in UK homes and several factors contribute towards misty windows:

  • Age: Over time, window seals naturally degrade.
  • Weather Exposure: Harsh weather conditions, including temperature fluctuations, wind, and rain, can accelerate seal deterioration.
  • Poor Installation: Improperly installed double-glazed units are more susceptible to seal failure.
  • Atmospheric Pressure Changes: Variations in air pressure can stress the seals.

But the good news is, you don't need to replace the entire window.

Replace The Pane, Not The Frame!

Instead of replacing the entire frame, its possible to simply swap out the failed insulated glass unit, allowing you to make substantial savings compared to a full window replacement. This is the most reliable and permanent solution. A professional glazier will measure your existing glass, pop out the plastic retaining beads, remove the failed pane, and drop in a brand-new, factory-sealed unit. Your frames stay in place, and there’s no mess or need to redecorate. This means:

  • Lower cost than replacing the whole window
  • Less disruption in your home
  • Faster turnaround
  • Improved appearance to your home
  • Enhanced energy efficiency
How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Misted Double Glazing Unit?

The cost of replacing misted double glazing units varies depending on several factors:

  • Size of the glass: Larger units naturally cost more to replace than smaller ones.
  • Type of glass: Special features like toughened glass, low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings, or decorative elements will increase the cost.
  • Access: Windows on higher floors or difficult-to-reach locations may require additional labour costs or if your windows are externally glazed, safety equipment such as scaffolding may be needed.
  • Location: Prices can vary significantly across different regions in the UK.

In most cases, replacing just the misted double glazing unit is far cheaper than replacing the whole window frame. Therefore, unless the frames themselves are damaged, replacing only the glass makes much more sense economically.

Misting Is Not The Same As Fogging Or Condensation

It’s important to not confuse this misting with fogging or condensation, which typically appears on the inside or outside of the window.

Fogging On The Inside Of The Window High indoor humidity can cause fogging from activities such as cooking, showering, boiling water, breathing, or indoor drying when the humidity meets the cold winter glass. Warm air holds more water vapor than cold air, so it drops the extra moisture onto the cold windowpane. Using extractor fans, dehumidifiers or opening trickle vents to improve airflow can usually resolve this.

Fogging On The Outside Of The Window High outdoor humidity and a cool exterior glass surface, often happening on clear summer or spring mornings, can cause fogging on the exterior. This usually means your windows are well-insulated and keeping heat inside your home effectively. This usually clears up by itself once the sun warms up the outside air and glass.
